Solomon Speaks to the People

International Sunday School January 12, 2020 Winter Quarter #7

1 Kings 8:14-21 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them. [15] Then he said: “Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said, [16] ‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, but I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.’ [17] “My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel. [18] But the LORD said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. [19] Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’ [20] “The LORD has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the LORD promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel. [21] I have provided a place there for the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.”

Obedient Faith

Deuteronomy 4:1-8  “And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.  (2)  You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you.  (3)  Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor.  (4)  But you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive today.  (5)  See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.  (6)  Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’  (7)  For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?  (8)  And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

Deuteronomy 4:12-13  Then the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.  (13)  And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.

Keep My Statutes and Ordinances

2 Chronicles 7:12-22  Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.  (13)  When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people,  (14)  if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  (15)  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.  (16)  For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.  (17)  And as for you, if you will walk before me as David your father walked, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my rules,  (18)  then I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to rule Israel.’  (19)  “But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them,  (20)  then I will pluck you up from my land that I have given you, and this house that I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.  (21)  And at this house, which was exalted, everyone passing by will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?’  (22)  Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought all this disaster on them.’”

Obeying God’s Law

Exodus 20:18-26  Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off  (19)  and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”  (20)  Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”  (21)  The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.  (22)  And the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.  (23)  You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.  (24)  An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.  (25)  If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.  (26)  And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’
