Freedom To Love

International Sunday School Lesson November 11, 2023 Fall #11

Romans 13:8-10 ESV Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. (9) For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (10) Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Romans 13:8-10 ESV

1 Corinthians 13:8-13 ESV Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. (9) For we know in part and we prophesy in part, (10) but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. (11) When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. (12) For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. (13) So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:8-13

Owe No One — Romans 13:8

This verse is not saying to not pay your debt or to never use credit. It is saying that we must do what we do out of love and not obligation. We should do for others as we would like done for us (Matthew 7:12).

Love Fulfills the Law — Romans 13:9-10

Freely demonstrating the love of God to the folks we met stops us from breaking the commandments. Love is at the core of the commandments (James 2:8-10).

When That Which is Perfect — 1 Corinthians 13:8-10

These verses are interpreted very differently by different folks. I believe the verses are talking about the gift of tongues, prophecy, and word of knowledge will be stopped in the new heaven and a new earth.

Put Away Childish Things — 1 Corinthians 13:11

The change between life on earth and the existence in heaven is comparable to the difference between our childhood and our adulthood.

Glass Darkly — 1 Corinthians 13:12

Our understanding in this existence is imperfect. However, in heaven, our understanding will be clear.

Faith, Hope, and Love — 1 Corinthians 13:13

Love is the greatest gift given to the Christian.
