The Day of Pentecost

International Sunday School Lesson May 7 2023 Spring Quarter #10

Acts 2:1-8 ESV  When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.  (2)  And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.  (3)  And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.  (4)  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.  (5)  Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.  (6)  And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.  (7)  And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?  (8)  And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?

Acts 2:1-8 ESV

Acts 2:14-24 ESV  But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.  (15)  For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.  (16)  But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:  (17)  “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;  (18)  even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.  (19)  And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;  (20)  the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.  (21)  And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’  (22)  “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—  (23)  this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.  (24)  God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Acts 2:14-24 ESV

Acts 2:37-39 ESV  Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”  (38)  And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  (39)  For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”

Acts 2:37-39 ESV

Jesus Makes a Promise

International Sunday School Lesson April 30 2023 Spring Quarter #9

Acts 1:1-11 ESV  In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,  (2)  until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.  (3)  He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.  (4)  And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;  (5)  for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”  (6)  So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”  (7)  He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.  (8)  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”  (9)  And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.  (10)  And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,  (11)  and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Acts 1:1-11 ESV

Jesus Reinstates Peter

International Sunday School April 23 2023 Spring #8

John 21:15-19 ESV  When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”  (16)  He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”  (17)  He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.  (18)  Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.”  (19)  (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Jesus Cooks Breakfast

International Sunday School April 16 2023 Spring #7

John 21:1-14 ESV  After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way.  (2)  Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.  (3)  Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.  (4)  Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  (5)  Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.”  (6)  He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.  (7)  That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.  (8)  The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.  (9)  When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread.  (10)  Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.”  (11)  So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.  (12)  Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.  (13)  Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.  (14)  This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

John 21:1-14 ESV

Disciples Believe the Resurrection

International Sunday School Lesson April 9 2023 Spring #6

Luke 24:13-27 ESV  That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,  (14)  and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.  (15)  While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.  (16)  But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.  (17)  And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.  (18)  Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”  (19)  And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,  (20)  and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.  (21)  But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.  (22)  Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,  (23)  and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.  (24)  Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”  (25)  And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  (26)  Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”  (27)  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Luke 24:13-27 ESV

Luke 24:30-31 ESV  When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.  (31)  And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.
