Obedient Faith

International Sunday School October 6, 2019 Fall #6

Deuteronomy 4:1-8  “And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.  (2)  You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you.  (3)  Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor.  (4)  But you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive today.  (5)  See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.  (6)  Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’  (7)  For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?  (8)  And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

Deuteronomy 4:12-13  Then the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.  (13)  And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.

Faithful in Consequences

Numbers 14:10-20  Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.  (11)  And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?  (12)  I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”  (13)  But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,  (14)  and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.  (15)  Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say,  (16)  ‘It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’  (17)  And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying,  (18)  ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’  (19)  Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”  (20)  Then the LORD said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.

Faithful Despite Unfaithfulness

Numbers 13:1-2  The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,  (2)  “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.”

Numbers 13:17-18  Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country,  (18)  and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many,

Numbers 13:25-28  At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land.  (26)  And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.  (27)  And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.  (28)  However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.

Numbers 14:1-2  Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night.  (2)  And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!

Numbers 14:5-10  Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.  (6)  And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes  (7)  and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.  (8)  If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.  (9)  Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.”  (10)  Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.

Faithful During Uncertainty

International Sunday School September 15, 2019

Exodus 16:1-15  They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.  (2)  And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness,  (3)  and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”  (4)  Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.  (5)  On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”  (6)  So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt,  (7)  and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us?”  (8)  And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD.”  (9)  Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’”  (10)  And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.  (11)  And the LORD said to Moses,  (12)  “I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’”  (13)  In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp.  (14)  And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground.  (15)  When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.
