Called to Mission

International Sunday School April 7, 2019 Spring Quarter #7

Matthew 10:1-15  And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.  (2)  The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;  (3)  Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;  (4)  Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.  (5)  These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans,  (6)  but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.  (7)  And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’  (8)  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.  (9)  Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts,  (10)  no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.  (11)  And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart.  (12)  As you enter the house, greet it.  (13)  And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.  (14)  And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.  (15)  Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

Matthew 4:12-22  Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.  (13)  And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,  (14)  so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:  (15)  “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—  (16)  the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”  (17)  From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  (18)  While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.  (19)  And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  (20)  Immediately they left their nets and followed him.  (21)  And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.  (22)  Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Called to Repent

Luke 19:1-10  He entered Jericho and was passing through.  (2)  And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.  (3)  And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.  (4)  So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.  (5)  And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”  (6)  So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.  (7)  And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”  (8)  And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”  (9)  And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.  (10)  For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Luke 15:11-24  And he said, “There was a man who had two sons.  (12)  And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.  (13)  Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.  (14)  And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.  (15)  So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.  (16)  And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.  (17)  “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger!  (18)  I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.  (19)  I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’  (20)  And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.  (21)  And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’  (22)  But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.  (23)  And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.  (24)  For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

Mark 1:16-20  Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.  (17)  And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”  (18)  And immediately they left their nets and followed him.  (19)  And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.  (20)  And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Luke 14:25-33  Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them,  (26)  “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.  (27)  Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.  (28)  For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?  (29)  Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,  (30)  saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’  (31)  Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?  (32)  And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.  (33)  So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
