The Lord Will Provide

Genesis 22:1-3  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”  (2)  He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”  (3)  So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

Genesis 22:6-14  And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.  (7)  And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”  (8)  Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.  (9)  When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.  (10)  Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.  (11)  But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”  (12)  He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”  (13)  And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.  (14)  So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

The Good Fight of Faith

1 Timothy 6:11-21  But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.  (12)  Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.  (13)  I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,  (14)  to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,  (15)  which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,  (16)  who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.  (17)  As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.  (18)  They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,  (19)  thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.  (20)  O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,”  (21)  for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.

Faithful Disciples

Acts 9:36-43  Now there was in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity.  (37)  In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.  (38)  Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Please come to us without delay.”  (39)  So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them.  (40)  But Peter put them all outside, and knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.  (41)  And he gave her his hand and raised her up. Then, calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.  (42)  And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.  (43)  And he stayed in Joppa for many days with one Simon, a tanner.

A Disciplined Faith

James 3:1-12  Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.  (2)  For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.  (3)  If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.  (4)  Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.  (5)  So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!  (6)  And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.  (7)  For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,  (8)  but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  (9)  With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.  (10)  From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.  (11)  Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?  (12)  Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
