The Cock Crow

by Donnie Bryson

The Passover

Jesus sat down to Passover
Celebrate with His friends
The eleven were ignorant
Of thirty silver sins.

Christ broke the bread and served the wine
His testament in blood
He would shed upon Galgotha
To clean sins with the flood

The eleven didn't know the night
Was falling hard next day
A precious fruit placed in the ground
Would start a whole new way

Who is the Greatest?

When eyes are blind and ears are deaf
Words stumble like a child
The friends talked about silly things
Apostles words went wild

Each one of them desired to have
Rule over the other
Pride is such a horrible thing
Sin, it is its mother

"The greatest will be as the least
The elder, the younger
The strongest will be the servant
Feed another's hunger"

Peter's Boast

"Simon, Simon, Satan desires
To shift you as the wheat
But I have prayed for you tonight
Hold to your faith so sweet"

"There will come a time, very soon
You will be a new man
Be a strength to your beloved friends
Help them to understand"

"I am a strength here on this night
I follow to the grave
Just point the way for me to go
Trusted friend that can save"

I have no fear of the jailer
His bars are not my fear
You know my heart, oh my Lord
You are the holy Seer"

"Peter, Peter, the cock won't crow
Before you deny me
Three different times this dark night
The shepherd struck, you flee"

The Garden

As night speed toward the traitor's kiss
Christ craved for the garden
Wanting to pray to the Father
Before being our pardon

"Peter and sons of Zebedee
Tarry and watch with me"
The master charged them in the gloom
Then left to make His plea

"Let the cup pass from me", He cried
"Let is pass", He did weep
"But if it isn't possible"
"Your will, Father, I keep"

He came back to the three asleep
"Could you not watch awhile?"
The spirit though very willing
Can't usurp fleshy bile

The second time Christ went to pray
He cried, same as the first
"Let it pass, Let it pass, Father"
The sorrow was the worst

The sheep were asleep while He prayed
Their eyes, very heavy
They slept in the garden the night
Sweat broke forth the levee

The Shepherd, silent, walked away
No need to wake them now
He prayed the third time like the last
Grieved, but willing to bow

"Sleep on, sleep on, now disciples
The hour is at hand"
The world will crucify the One
It cannot understand

Judas and the Kiss

The betrayer came with the crowd
Creeping with spiteful band
The chief priests and the chief elders
The leaders of the land

Sometimes receive a kiss of love
Sometimes, one full of fire
But our world never saw a kiss
Like one from the liar

Struck in the house of his good friends
Carried away with staff
To the alter of sacrifice
Salvation's' bitter half

Peter with Sword

Peter woke from his deep slumber
And drew his sword that night
He wanted to prove his courage
That he would not take flight

He used his sword on one of them
And struck him on the ear
He wanted to prove to his friends
That he mastered his fear

"Peter, put your sword in its place"
Lovingly, said the Christ
Peter probably thought his sword
Could stop the cock crow thrice

"Peter, if you live by the sword
You will die by it too"
The ear planted back on the man
Now bloodless, just like new

They carried Yeshua away
His sheep are full of fear
Frantically pondering their fate
Losing their only Seer

Peter Denies Christ

Fearfully, Peter followed them
Keeping back, afar off
He wondered what would happen next
Courage was growing soft

He went with another brother
Known unto the high priest
Who asked the damsel at the door
Let Peter in, at least

He sat by the warm fire inside
While the Lamb was accused
He longed for that earthy courage
The servant's ear had used

When a girl saw him by the fire
She recognized his face
She knew him in a different time
And in a different place

She had seen him walk with the Lord
Happy to be his friend
Suddenly, before he realized
The first time, Peter sinned

"Woman", he said, "I know him not"
Peter spoke without thought
He was far from the authority
He had earlier sought

In disbelief, the young girl turned
Quietly walked away
No one has the courage in the night
That they have in the day

Another one in the crowd tried next
"You are one of his friends"
Before he realized what he had said
The second time, he sinned

The fear swelled in his heart that night
"I know him not", he cried
Without forethought, Peter renounced
The second time, he lied

The cousin of the wounded man
(Now with a healed ear)
Recognized Peter right away
His face now full of fear

"You were in the garden tonight
I saw you there with him
Your Galilaen words prove me
Though this fire light is dim"

The third time he denied the Lord
The cock crew on the spot
Jesus painfully looked at him
Peter's face was red hot

Peter remembered Jesus' words
About what he would do
Peter remembered is own words
In a different milieu

Peter ran as fast as he could
Weeping remorseful tears
He thought he could be brave that night
Before filled with strong fears

The Trial

The trial went very quick
They all knew what to do
There was no lawyer slick
To free my Lord that day
No angels from high flew
To take Him from harm's way

The Walk to the Cross

The dusty road to the cross
Was filled with the crowd's silence
The silence of the mob's shouts
The silence of the solder's
Armor clashing with the march
But the worst silence of all
Was His friend's unspoken words

The Crucifixion

The grass was red with blood that day
That day upon the hill
When Jesus took on our sins
And paid the bill

The sky became dark as night
That day upon the hill
When Jesus took on our sins
And paid the bill

The trees hid their face
That day upon the hill
When Jesus took on our sins
And paid the bill

The sheep were scattered
That day upon the hill
When Jesus took on our sins
And paid the bill

The Burial

It wasn't one of the twelve disciples
That begged from Pilate the body of Christ
It was Joseph, a good man, and just
Who took the Lord's body down from the cross
Not doing it to fulfill prideful lust

Mary finds an empty tomb

Mary and her friends brought spices to the tomb of our Lord
The destitution of the cross could not break their love's cord
They desired to anoint His body that Easter morning
Wipe away the worm and the stench of the grave's adorning

They were surprised with what they found at the tomb that day
The heavy stone at the month of the cave was rolled away
The angels said, "Why seek ye the living among the dead?"

He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, 'The Son of man must be delivered unto the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. Luke 24:6, 7

Peter Finds an Empty Tomb

Peter arose
Ran to the grave
Beheld the clothes
Empty, the cave
Astonishment
Filling his heart
He wondered what
Could be his part

Peter Forgiven

We were fishing in the boat
When he appeared in the night
He asked if we had meat
"Empty, not a fish in sight"

"Cast your net on the right side"
He commanded us all
We humbly obeyed and
The fish heeded His call

We fixed supper that night
Beside the placid sea
Jesus looked down at the fish
Then looked straight at me

"Simon, Do you love me more than these"
With sadness in His voice
Caused by actions in the outer gate
When fear was my choice

"You know I love you Lord"
With tears in my voice I cried
"Feed my Lambs", He said
Again, just like before He died

"Simon, do you love me",
He asked again
"You know I do my Lord"
I said remembering my sin

"Simon, do you love me?"
As we sat warming by the fire
"You know I love You my Lord"
Does He think I am still a liar?

"Feed my sheep", he said
Three times I denied Him one night
Three times I had to declare
That I had regained my sight

The One who really holds the key
To heaven, hell, and the grave
Forgave me by the placid sea
He is the One that can save
